This is a question we get asked at almost every consult, so we figured we'd write it down once: when does it make sense to go with IKEA PAX, and when is custom the smarter long-term move?
The honest answer is neither one is wrong — they solve different problems. PAX is a system designed to deliver 80% of a custom wardrobe for 25% of the cost. If you can live inside its assumptions, it's a great deal. If you can't, you'll spend the same money fighting the system that you would've spent on custom.
Here's how to tell which side you're on.

When PAX is the right answer
We'll cheerfully tell you to buy PAX if any of these apply:
- You're in a rental. Don't invest serious money in someone else's wall. PAX is freestanding and moves with you.
- You'll be in the home less than 3 years. The break-even on custom usually requires a longer hold.
- You have a wall that happens to be exactly the right size. If your wall is 78–79 inches tall and 78–79, 59, or 39 inches wide, PAX will fit cleanly with no fillers. Rare but it happens.
- Your budget is tight. No custom shop in Calgary will match PAX's base price on a real wardrobe.
- You enjoy the assembly puzzle. Genuinely — some people do.
One more PAX hack: if you're set on PAX but want it to read as custom, look at Semihandmade doors. They make custom fronts that fit IKEA PAX boxes. The combination — IKEA carcasses, Semihandmade doors — gets you ~70% of the custom look for ~60% of the custom cost. Not always the right call, but worth knowing about.
When custom is the right answer
We'd tell you to go custom in any of these cases:
- You have 8.5- or 9-foot ceilings. PAX maxes at 93″ (7'9″). That leaves a 12-inch dust trap above the wardrobe. Custom goes floor to ceiling.
- Your wall is between PAX widths. A 76-inch wall takes either a 58⅞-inch run with a 17-inch gap, or a forced filler panel. Both look weird. Custom fills it.
- Your wall is out of square. Most Calgary homes built before 2010 have walls that drift ¼–¾ inch over 10 feet. PAX won't follow that drift. Custom is scribed to it.
- You want a specific look that PAX doesn't offer. Shaker with brass pulls. Slab with brushed-bronze pulls. High-gloss colored. A specific paint match. The IKEA front catalog is finite.
- You're staying in the home for 7+ years. Real-estate agents have told us multiple times that built-in custom closets show better than freestanding ones at sale time. The investment shows up at closing.
- You're building a walk-in. PAX wasn't designed for walk-ins. It's a wall-of-wardrobes system. A walk-in needs an L-shape or U-shape and PAX doesn't bend.
The five regrets we've seen most
Over the years we've come into a lot of homes mid-PAX-installation, or to replace PAX with custom. The five most common regrets:
- "I didn't realize PAX wouldn't reach the ceiling." The gap above is the #1 PAX complaint. People didn't notice it in the IKEA showroom because the showroom ceilings are 12 feet tall.
- "The fillers ruined the look." When the wall is wider than the PAX modules add up to, you need a filler panel — a strip of foil-wrapped material that doesn't quite match the door fronts. It's the visible compromise.
- "The drawer slides loosened after 4 years." PAX drawers are good. Not lifetime good. Customers who use the drawers heavily often replace them.
- "I spent more than custom by the time I added everything I wanted." The base PAX price doesn't include drawers, glass inserts, pull-out trays, LED lighting, or Semihandmade fronts. Once you stack those on, the gap to custom shrinks quickly.
- "It looked great in the catalog and reads as IKEA in person." The PAX system has a visual signature. Some homes carry it well; some don't.
Three regrets we've seen on the custom side too
Custom isn't free of regret. The three we've seen:
- "I went for the fanciest finish and don't notice it day to day." High-gloss painted slab is gorgeous on day one and shows every fingerprint on day two. If you have kids, ask about satin painted finishes instead.
- "I added a closet island and the room is too small for it." 8×8 walk-ins look great in renderings with islands. They feel cramped in person. We'll often steer you away from an island in a small room.
- "I picked hardware to match a phase and now I want to change it." Brass everywhere was a 2022–2024 moment. Black bar pulls have been the safe bet for a decade. Choose hardware you'd be fine with in 2030, not just this year.
Our actual recommendation
If you're in a Calgary home you plan to stay in for at least 5 years, on a wall that has any odd dimension or any non-perfect-square situation, and the budget allows, custom is the right move. It increases the value of your home, it lasts a lifetime, and it's the kind of feature that buyers notice when you sell.
If you're in a rental, or your wall is conveniently sized, or you genuinely just need storage and don't care about it disappearing into the room — PAX is a fine choice. Save the money for something else.
We don't get offended when people pick PAX. We get offended when people pile PAX-plus-Semihandmade upgrades on top and end up with something that doesn't quite work.
